As hard as it may be to believe, in 1999 electronics manufacturers were selling a bulky 34” tube television capable of displaying high-definition at a cost of $9000. Just ten years later, high-definition televisions twice that size and a fraction of that weight and price are commonplace. The hot items today are Plasma, LED and LCD flat-panel HDTV displays with 1080p resolution and 240mhz refresh rates.
What will be the next big thing?
Well, aside from the digital downloading of movies and TV content, my prediction is that the next big thing will be 3D entertainment in our homes. Although it has been tried before, 3D television has never looked impressive. In its initial incarnations, the technology provided only a brief “wow” factor before it fizzled. Like everyone else I know that tried it, the glasses only gave me a headache.
Jump to 2010. Manufacturers have made vast improvements and the new 3D technology is now actually very impressive. 3D glasses have also gotten better. In fact, some manufacturers are designing 3D TV home experiences that do not require special glasses. Just imagine tuning in to the Super Bowl and watching a pass being thrown deep down the field that you feel you could reach out and catch yourself. These displays will have you jumping back as a creature leaps from the shadows or reaching for an umbrella as the local weather map drips rain or snow in your living room. Cool huh?
3D programming will not roll out as slowly as HD did back in the early 2000’s. Unlike the way that transition was held hostage to standards wars, 3D standards have already been agreed upon. By this time next year, Playstation and Xbox games will all offer 3D versions; cable companies will offer 3D programming (DirecTV is announcing an all-3D channel in the second quarter of 2010); and of course, Blu-Ray discs will have 3D versions of movies available. In addition to televisions, computer screens will also incorporate 3D technology so you can surf the net in 3D. This is not science fiction; I have seen it. Believe me, it is real. Once you see this technology, you will want it as well.
2010 will be the year that consumers will be introduced to 3D entertainment that really works. Rest assured that EMC Home Entertainment will have these new electronics for you to check out. We think you’ll be so amazed, you’ll insist we install one in your home that day. Get ready. 3D is coming at you!
